Making the playoffs is one thing. Being the team nobody wants to face in October is another. Whether they’ve dominated the standings all season long or are hitting their stride at just the right time, these MLB teams can be a matchup nightmare in the playoffs.
Some have the star power to take over a series, while others have the pitching and depth to give any opponent a serious challenge. However they get the job done, these MLB teams could make for some very difficult playoff matchups.
With the regular season now entering its final stretch, several clubs are starting to look particularly dangerous. Here’s a look at five MLB teams nobody wants to face in October.
Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox have gone from fighting to stay in the playoff picture to looking like one of baseball’s most dangerous teams, and they’re doing it at exactly the right time.
Boston went a remarkable 21-4 in July, turning what looked like a difficult postseason path into a remarkable turnaround. They’ve carried that hot streak right through August, putting them firmly in the hunt for an AL Wild Card spot.
Boston’s bullpen has emerged as a major strength, with the team posting MLB’s best bullpen ERA over a lengthy stretch of its surge. The addition of closer Aroldis Chapman has only added to their depth, giving the Red Sox yet another arm to shut down opponents once it has a lead.
What makes Boston so interesting for this list is that they aren’t simply a team that’s been dominating the competition all year long. They’ve caught fire at exactly the right time, and now they have a chance to carry that momentum into October.
Milwaukee Brewers
The Brewers have quietly put together the kind of season that should make every potential playoff opponent nervous. Milwaukee currently owns the best record in MLB and is on pace for the first 100-win season in franchise history.
What makes Milwaukee particularly dangerous is how difficult it is to find a weakness. The Brewers have one of the best run differentials in the Majors, yet they’ve been able to win games without relying on a power-heavy offence. Their pitching, defence and ability to manufacture runs have made them one of the league’s most complete teams.
Milwaukee has enough depth to grind out wins and enough firepower to blow games open. That kind of balance is exactly what makes a team dangerous in a short playoff series.
The Brewers may not have the same star power as some of the other teams on this list, but that’s part of what makes them so difficult to deal with. They don’t need one player to carry them, and there are very few weaknesses for an opponent to exploit.
Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies have been one of baseball’s hottest teams as of late, and they’re starting to put real pressure on the Braves in the NL East. Philadelphia has steadily chipped away at Atlanta’s lead, giving the Phillies a chance to make the division race interesting down the stretch.
The timing is particularly interesting because the Phillies already know what it takes to win in October. Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner give them a lineup packed with postseason experience, while their rotation has enough quality to make them a difficult opponent in a short series.
Philadelphia has reached the NLDS in each of the past four seasons, including a World Series appearance in 2022, so there is little mystery about how this group handles the pressure. If their current form carries into October, they could be one of the toughest teams to knock out.
Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers don’t need much of an introduction when it comes to October baseball. They’re the reigning back-to-back World Series champions, and they have all the star power and depth needed to make them a matchup nightmare.
Shohei Ohtani is the obvious headline, particularly with his return to the mound adding another dimension to an already loaded roster. Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts give the lineup two more proven postseason stars, while Yoshinobu Yamamoto and the recently acquired Tarik Skubal give the rotation a pair of legitimate aces.
What makes the Dodgers so dangerous is that they don’t need to be at their best to beat you. This roster is so stacked and so deep that even injuries and stretches of inconsistent play haven’t slowed them down. When a team has that much talent at its disposal, you probably don’t want to be the one standing in its way.
San Diego Padres
The Padres may reach the postseason via the Wild Card, but they have the kind of roster that would make them a tough out for any opponent. Despite a slow start to the season, San Diego managed to turn things around and convinced management to add reinforcements at the trade deadline.
One of those additions was Casey Mize, who arrived with a 2.70 ERA through his first 16 starts of the season before joining San Diego. He gives the Padres rotation a much-needed boost and is the kind of pitcher who can impact a playoff series.
Then there’s Fernando Tatis Jr., who has started to look like the superstar San Diego expected when it signed him to a massive extension. His combination of power, speed and defence gives the Padres a player who can change a game in more ways than one.
This season may not have gone the way they envisioned back in spring training, but if the Padres get into the playoffs, there’s a good chance somebody is going to wish they hadn’t.
