The NBA offseason is where championship dreams are built — at least on paper. Every summer brings blockbuster trades, headline-grabbing signings, and plenty of optimism, but not every move actually makes a team better.

This offseason has been one of the busiest in recent memory. Several contenders have completely reshaped their rosters, while a few up-and-coming teams have made the kind of moves that could push them into the playoff picture or even title contention.
Of course, the real answers won’t come until the games begin. Chemistry, health and player development all play a huge role. Still, looking strictly at the moves made over the summer, a handful of teams stand out from the rest.
Here’s a look at the NBA teams that appear to have improved the most heading into the 2026-27 season.
Philadelphia 76ers
Notable additions:
- LeBron James
- Jaylen Brown
- Anfernee Simons
- Dean Wade
No team changed its outlook more this summer than the Philadelphia 76ers. The front office pulled off one of the biggest offseasons in recent memory by adding both LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, instantly turning an already talented roster into one of the favourites to win the NBA title.
The Sixers didn’t stop after landing two superstars. Anfernee Simons provides instant offence and shooting, while Dean Wade adds valuable size and versatility. Together, they give Philadelphia more depth and lineup flexibility on both ends of the floor.
The projected starting five of Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Jaylen Brown, LeBron James and Joel Embiid is arguably the most complete lineup in the league. Of course, talent on paper doesn’t guarantee a championship. Building chemistry and staying healthy will be the biggest challenges, especially with LeBron and Embiid. Still, if this group clicks, it’s hard to argue that any team improved more over the summer.
Miami Heat
Notable additions:
- Giannis Antetokounmpo
- Bobby Portis
- Tim Hardaway Jr.
The Heat landed arguably the biggest prize available by acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo, instantly putting themselves back in the championship conversation. Players of his calibre rarely become available, and when they do, you do whatever it takes to get them.
Giannis gives Miami exactly what it needed. He’s one of the NBA’s most dominant two-way players and can completely take over a game on both ends of the floor. Pairing him with Bam Adebayo creates one of the league’s most intimidating frontcourts, giving the Heat an identity built around defence, toughness and relentless effort.
The supporting moves shouldn’t be overlooked either. Bobby Portis brings energy, rebounding and valuable scoring off the bench, while Tim Hardaway Jr. adds veteran experience and another reliable perimeter shooting threat.
Losing Tyler Herro hurts, but landing a former MVP is the kind of move that can completely reshape a franchise. With Giannis on board, Miami should be in the mix for another deep playoff run this season.
Toronto Raptors
Notable additions:
- Kawhi Leonard
- Kyle Anderson
The Raptors made one of the boldest moves of the offseason by bringing Kawhi Leonard back to Toronto. While the trade has been agreed to, it’s still on hold pending an NBA investigation involving the Clippers. If it goes through, the Raptors will welcome back the player who delivered the greatest season in franchise history.
Even at this stage of his career, Leonard remains one of the NBA’s premier two-way players when healthy. His ability to score from anywhere on the floor gives Toronto something it has been missing, and pairing him with Scottie Barnes creates one of the league’s most versatile defensive duos.
Toronto also added veteran forward Kyle Anderson, whose basketball IQ and defensive ability should strengthen the rotation. If the Kawhi trade is finalized and Leonard can stay healthy, the Raptors have the potential to be one of the best defensive teams in the NBA.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Notable additions:
- LaMelo Ball
- Josh Green
- Trey Lyles
- Isaiah Evans
Minnesota was already knocking on the door of championship contention, but the addition of LaMelo Ball could be the move that pushes the Timberwolves into the NBA’s top tier. Anthony Edwards has developed into one of the league’s biggest stars, and now he’ll finally have an elite playmaker beside him who can create offence, push the pace and make life easier for everyone around him.
Ball’s arrival allows Edwards to spend more time doing what he does best: scoring. Together, they have the potential to become one of the NBA’s most exciting backcourts, combining Ball’s elite passing with Edwards’ explosive athleticism and shot-making ability.
The Timberwolves also strengthened their depth by adding Josh Green and Trey Lyles, while rookie Isaiah Evans gives the team another intriguing young talent to develop. With Ball now in the mix, Minnesota has taken another big step toward becoming a true title contender.
Portland Trail Blazers
Notable additions:
- Ja Morant
- Branden Carlson
- Micah Potter
The Trail Blazers took a massive swing this offseason, and it came in the form of Ja Morant. While he’s had his share of off-court issues, Morant is one of the NBA’s most electrifying players when healthy and instantly raises Portland’s ceiling.
With Morant playing alongside Damian Lillard, the pairing has the potential to become one of the league’s most dangerous backcourts. Morant’s ability to attack the basket should complement Lillard’s elite shooting, giving opposing defences plenty to worry about. With Deni Avdija, Toumani Camara and Donovan Clingan rounding out the starting lineup, Portland suddenly has a balanced roster with talent on both ends of the floor.
The Blazers also added frontcourt depth with Branden Carlson and Micah Potter, while bringing back Robert Williams III on a new deal. Those moves won’t grab many headlines, but they significantly strengthen the supporting cast. If Morant returns to his best, Portland could quickly emerge as a dark horse to contend in a competitive Western Conference.
